Shivdhara is located at the head of the Varuna river in the vicinity of Makalu. A stream of water has flowed from the stone ceiling at a height of about fifty meters inside the stone cave, which is called Shivdhara. When King Bhagirath, described in the Puranas, made Ganga descend from heaven to earth, Ganga agreed to descend to earth, but no one could dare to stand up to her speed. Shivaji took the responsibility of holding the Beg of Ganga. Ganga was proud of her strength. She thought that Shivaji could not hold his own, instead I would crush him and throw him into the underworld. As the Ganga fell, Shivaji tied Ganga in his jata and made her like a prisoner. After being entangled in Shivaji’s 22 jatas for many years, her pride was crushed and she was finally freed after apologizing to Shivaji. When the Ganga was entangled in Shivaji’s Jata, four small streams gushed out from the Jata, their names are Shivadhara, Akashganga, Gomukhganga and Bhagirathiganga. Shivdhara will be held in Sansuvasabha, the remaining three are in India.
There is another myth regarding the origin of Shivdhara. Barun longed for a son, but even after seven daughters were born, no son was born. So he said goodbye to his wife and went to the Himalayas to ask for a son. After he went there, a son named Brahmaputra was born in the house, Baruna did not know about this, he wandered here and there without coming back home. After many years, Barun’s wife sent her seven daughters in search of their father. On his way to find his father, he saw seven hunters on the way. The hunters who were attracted by the sight of beautiful girls showed their greed to give beautiful clothes, bangles, thread, jewelry and offered to walk with them. Six girls agreed and followed the six hunters, but the younger Sansari Mai was a little shy, she did not agree to go. Then the hunter said that I will give you even one rupee money. Now she also got lost and walked with him. That is why while worshiping the goddess, bangles, threads, flags are offered to other goddesses, but only one rupee is offered to Sansari Mai. On the other hand, Barun also misses his home after many years and jumps through a hole through a stone to return home in a hurry. The river formed when he jumped is Shiva river.
