Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

Activity Overview

The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a 20-day adventure in eastern Nepal, offering 18 days of actual trekking over 220 km. This route leads to the base of Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586m), the world’s third-highest peak, located in the remote Taplejung District. Unlike the more popular Everest and Annapurna routes, Kanchenjunga remains a lesser-trodden and peaceful trail, ideal for trekkers seeking raw natural beauty and solitude.

The journey begins and ends in Bhadrapur, with jeep rides to Sekathum via Taplejung. From Sekathum, the real trek starts along the Tamor River, passing through charming villages, dense forests, and into the heart of the mountains. Trekkers visit both the North and South Base Camps, witnessing stunning snow-covered peaks and vibrant landscapes. Spring offers blooming rhododendrons, while autumn provides crystal-clear mountain views and rich biodiversity.

As a restricted region, permits are required: a Kanchenjunga Special Permit, KCA entry, and a TIMS card. The trek is considered strenuous due to its length and elevation, but hiring a licensed guide and porter makes it manageable. This trek promises thrilling suspension bridge crossings, alpine passes, diverse flora and fauna, and deep cultural immersion in Tibetan-Buddhist villages and monasteries — a rare and rewarding experience in one of Nepal’s hidden gems.
